DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT

EUMINDA influence public policy instruments to better implement the just transition principle by recognising, balancing, and repairing the long-term damages and legacies of mining (MDLs) affecting societies and the environment in the shift from fossil raw material extraction towards more sustainable solutions.

The project focuses on three interrelated thematic challenge areas that effectively support improved handling of MDLs in both social and environmental contexts. These areas are aligned with the thematic expertise and interests of all project partners and include:

  • Legal aspects
  • Socio-economic issues
  • Sustainability

Project regions concentrate on one or more of these areas, depending on their local context and thematic expertise. Partners focusing on the same theme work closely together, while cross-thematic knowledge exchange fosters the emergence of new ideas and perspectives on different aspects of MDLs.

EUMINDA implements an intensive learning and policy improvement process at both interregional and local/regional levels. Stakeholders are involved in both interregional and local/regional activities, enabling them to build competencies and benefit from mutual knowledge exchange. In doing so, the project builds synergies between regional and interregional levels, effectively supporting the planned improvements in public policies.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES
EUMINDA addresses, via its overall objective, a challenge of EU-wide relevance: it aims to influence policies contributing to the just transition principle to better recognise, balance, and repair long-term mining damages and legacies on societies and the environment in the process of transferring from fossil raw material extraction to more sustainable options.

Additionally, it has two specific objectives:

1. Improve institutional frameworks for dealing with long-term MDLs on societies and the environment through capacity building of relevant organisations and decision-making bodies and targeted practices and tools supporting policy development and implementation.

2. Ensuring appropriate levels of citizen and stakeholder involvement in both the mining damage claims settlement process and in the public support for mining-related interventions serving either phasing out or continuing mining activities or sustainable use of mining facilities.

PROJECT RESULTS

  • Mining damage policy for South Limburg (Netherlands
  • Sustainable and Integrated Urban Development Strategy (Spain)
