As part of the ROCCS project, experimental studies (in situ tests) will be carried out, in which CO2 will be injected into the hard coal bed under in-situ conditions. For the injection process, horizontal boreholes will be used as part of the project in order to assess the benefits of increasing the contact area of the deposit - CO2. The need to conduct such tests results from the limitations that have been encountered so far in the attempts to inject CO2, which should be explained by the swelling of coal accompanying CO2 adsorption. The main research station of the ROCCS project will be located on the premises of the "Barbara" Experimental Mine (KDB) in Mikołów, which is part of the Central Mining Institute.
In situ tests will be preceded by background measurements of CO2 / CH4 emissions (deep and surface tests) and tests of the properties of the carbon present in the deposit intended for CO2 injection. The laboratory tests will use coal samples taken from KDB, as well as from a deeply located coal deposit, selected by an industrial partner. For tests aimed at determining the flow rate and the possibility of CO2 and CH4 storage in in-situ conditions (e.g. sorption capacity, CO2 / CH4 adsorption-desorption kinetics, bed permeability), intact cores with sizes much larger than these will be used. used conventionally. The next task in the project will be numerical modeling of the CO2 injection process. The results of the preliminary simulations will be used in planning the in situ test. The results of in situ tests will, in turn, allow for the validation of the developed model. Simulations with the use of an already proven model, they will support the process of designing a commercial installation.
Based on the results of in situ tests, laboratory tests of coal properties and modeling, a technical and economic analysis of the tested process will be carried out. This analysis will allow for optimal configuration of the horizontal wells planned to be used for CO2 injection and minimization of the costs of their operation. The potential costs related to the identified environmental risk factors (e.g. gas leakage, land subsidence) will also be estimated.
The project will deliver a set of best practice guidelines to support the commercial development of CO2 storage technologies using state-of-the-art techniques in the field of horizontal directional drilling. The findings will be applied to the design of a commercial CO2 storage facility in a coal deposit selected by the industrial partner.
