First CLD Workshop within SMARTER Project

On 25 March 2026, the first workshop of the SMARTER project was organized our project partner, Gdańskie Wody in Gdańsk, focusing on the participation of residents in the development of blue-green infrastructure (BGI) from a systems thinking perspective. The workshop brought together representatives of public administration, academia, and non-governmental organisations. GIG-PIB representatives were actively involved in the preparation and co-facilitation of the workshop, fostering knowledge sharing and the exchange of experiences among participants.

During the session, participants were introduced to key systems thinking tools, including the Iceberg Model and Causal Loop Diagrams (CLD). Together, they examined real-life examples of participatory processes related to the development of green spaces and blue-green infrastructure, identifying both factors that encourage residents’ engagement and barriers that hinder their participation.

The workshop enabled participants to explore the challenge of public participation within a broader systemic context, taking into account not only visible events but also behavioural patterns, institutional structures, and underlying beliefs that shape the functioning of the system. As a result, participants developed a shared understanding of the issue and generated valuable insights that will serve as a foundation for further work on mapping system relationships and developing a Causal Loop Diagram during the upcoming workshops.

SMARTER project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement N° 101212794.
