On May 16-17, 2024, a technical meeting of the GreenJOBS project partners was held at the GIG-NRI to discuss the progress of work on the development of new business models for decommissioned underground hard coal mines. A number of technologies are being considered, including photovoltaics, wind energy, geothermal energy, energy storage with the use of dense liquids, as well as solutions to increase the number of new green jobs in the processing of e-waste or the production of a high-energy fraction of municipal waste RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel).
The meeting, which included project partners and invited guests from Tauron Inwestycje and the Polish Power Plants Association, was a platform for discussing the potential benefits of the GreenJOBS project. A panel on good practices in the transformation of post-mining and post-power plant areas, moderated by Professor Stanisław Tokarski, highlighted the positive impact the project could have. The exchange of experiences allowed for the assessment of the project's results and indicated further directions for its implementation. During the discussion, the potential for social acceptance for all post-mining activities and the crucial role of decision-makers in supporting the transformation of mining regions were emphasized, instilling a sense of optimism and hope for the future.
On the second day of the meeting, the participants took part in a technical visit to the Bobrek mine, which, together with the Aller-Barredo-Figaredo mine in Spain and the Premogovnik Velenje mine in Slovenia, will test the solutions of the GreenJOBS project. The business models developed for these 3 coal mines will allow to indicate important elements of the roadmap for each coal company or region that decides to decarbonize its operations.
Project GreenJOBS: Leveraging the competitive advantages of end-of-life underground coal mines to maximise the creation of green and quality jobs is implemented from the funds of the Research Fund for Coal and Steel and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. This is the first international project on the reuse of underground hard coal mine assets and their infrastructure through the use of green energy production and storage technologies (geothermal energy, photovoltaics, wind energy, pumped-storage power plants, batteries, green hydrogen).
