On 8 October 2026, the Central Mining Institute – National Research Institute (GIG-PIB) in Katowice, Poland, hosted the Final Dissemination Workshop of the international HydroMine project. The event was held in a hybrid format, welcoming participants both on site and online.
Coordinated by GIG-PIB, HydroMine explores hydrogen production from municipal waste by combining a novel borehole gasification process with advanced gas separation techniques. The workshop provided an opportunity to present the consortium’s research results and examine prospects for further development and exploitation of the technologies investigated.
The presentations covered the entire technological chain: preparation and upgrading of refuse-derived fuel (RDF), hydrogen-oriented gasification, and hydrogen separation and purification using membrane and adsorption technologies. Other topics included plasma-assisted syngas upgrading, the techno-economic assessment of the HydroMine concept, and the life cycle assessment and carbon footprint of hydrogen production from RDF.
Invited expert presentations brought a broader perspective on hydrogen applications in decarbonised energy systems, the role of bioenergy, and the development of industrial-scale waste-to-hydrogen facilities, including the HYIELD project. The programme also addressed the further exploitation of HydroMine results and opportunities to continue collaboration through follow-up research projects.
The event enabled an exchange of knowledge and experience on waste-to-hydrogen technologies and the conditions needed for their future deployment. We thank all speakers, project partners and participants for their contributions and discussion.
HydroMine is funded by the European Union’s Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) under Grant Agreement No. 101112629. National support: Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education, Contract No. 5747/FBWiS/2023/2024/2.
