On the 16th of May this year, the Central Mining Institute hosted a delegation of the representatives of the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil, which is currently conducting a trade mission in the Silesian Voivodeship. The meeting was attended by government representatives of Minas Gerais such as Juliano Pinto, Undersecretary of the Secretariat of Economic Development, as well as representatives of institutions for promoting innovation and supporting the development of entrepreneurship: FAPEMIG, MINING HUB, FUMSOFT, and Xabier Sabalza, the mission organiser on the side of the European Commission. The goal of the visit was to establish cooperation between scientific entities and entrepreneurs of both the regions.
At the Central Mining Institute, the guests were familiarised with our modern research architecture and the activities of the Institute e.g. within the Regional Networks of Specialist Observatories, the regional ecosystem of innovation in the Silesian Voivodeship.
The Silesian Voivodeship was appointed by the European Commission to cooperate with the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais in 2018 as part of the EU program “International Urban Cooperation: Sustainable and Innovative Cities and Regions – Regional Action Latin America and the Caribbean” (IUC-LAC), which is financed through the Foreign Policy Instrument (FPI).
IUC-LA is a program of interregional cooperation, the purpose of which is to increase innovation and competitiveness, and to supply new possibilities for regional economic development, as well as to exchange experience in the field of the implementation and monitoring of smart specialisations. This will make it possible to strengthen the cooperation between the regions of the European Union and their counterparts in Latin America by developing joint projects and creating the opportunity of entering new markets.
