Professor Stanisław Prusek graduated from the Silesian University of Technology, Department of Mining and Geology. He began to work in the Central Mining Institute in 1991. Between 2003 and 2010 he held the position of the Head of the Department of Extraction Technologies and Mining Supports. In October 2010 Professor Prusek was granted the title of Associate Professor at the Central Mining Institute. He is an acknowledged expert in the field of mining and geological engineering. During his scientific and research career he has mainly dealt with a selection of underground roof supports, the forecasting of longwall drift deformation and goaf reconsolidation.
Professor Prusek summarised his research on mining drifts in his original monograph presented as a habilitation thesis titled: “Forecasting methodology for longwall galleries located in areas of cave mining.” In 2010 Professor Prusek was granted a scientific Witold Budryk Award by the VII Division of the Polish Academy of Sciences for his monograph. He has devoted his recent years of research to the stability of longwall workings. The results were presented in his original monograph: “Stability of longwall workings during the operation of coal deposits based on cave mining,” published in 2016. He has presented the results of his research in about 190 original and co-author publications in addition to listed author’s monographs. His articles have been published in, among others: Archives of Mining Sciences, the Journal of Mining Science, Disaster Advances, Engineering Structures, the Arabian Journal of Geosciences, Computers and Geotechnics, International Journal of Mining, Reclamation and Environment, Acta Geodynamica et Geomaterialia, Pure and Applied Geophysics, and the Journal of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.
Professor Stanislaw Prusek has managed research teams from the Central Mining Institute in a number of national and international projects, working with research institutions in Europe and across the world. In 2013 he received the A.M. Terpigoriew Medal, a distinction granted by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine for the contribution to the development of cooperation between the National Mining University in Dnipropetrovsk and GIG. Professor Prusek has contributed to and written a number of research and service works carried out for coal mines and companies working with the mining industry. He is a co-author of 60 patent applications and utility models. Professor Prusek developed inventions which have received many awards and distinctions in national and international competitions. He is a member of national and foreign associations and organizations including: AusIMM - Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, International Organizing Committee of World Mining Congress, Mining Committee of Polish Academy of Sciences, and a member of the Committee Presidium. Professor Prusek serves as Deputy Chairman of the Commission for Hazards in Underground Coal Mines at the Higher Mining Office. In addition, he is an Expert at the Higher Mining Office for the affairs of Mining Plants Operation, and the President of the Association of Mining Engineers and Technicians at GIG.
